Rangers manager Michael Beale has been backed to convince Alfredo Morelos to sign a new deal at Ibrox by Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Morelos’ contract situation

As things stand, Morelos, who is currently picking up £33k-per-week, is set to see his contract at Ibrox expire at the end of the season.

The Colombian’s latest appearance for Michael Beale’s side saw him score a goal in Rangers’ recent 3-2 win over Hibernian in the SPFL.

With his contract running down, the newly appointed Gers boss has been backed to help convince Morelos to put pen to paper on a new deal.

The Latest: Beale backed to convince Morelos

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan had this to say about Morelos and his relationship with Beale.

He said: “Look, if it wasn’t a manager Morelos didn’t already know then we might not have seen that same impact on Thursday. But because he’s got that relationship with Beale, it can only be a huge plus.

“I know it wasn’t the appointment that some people wanted, but he’s got that relationship already built. He doesn’t need to do that groundwork with most of the players.

“If he can get the best out of Morelos, then it can only be a good sign for his chances of staying at the club. He’s a fantastic goalscorer, his record has proved that again and again.

“Rangers need to find that momentum, and if Beale can restore that winning feeling and positive atmosphere then Morelos could come to his senses.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed at Rangers

Having scored 116 goals in 244 appearances for Rangers, there is no doubting the striker’s ability to score a goal, as Whelan mentioned and as he showed against Hibernian.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the campaign, if the centre-forward continues to be given the chance to play regularly and manages to repay the faith put in him by Beale in the shape of scoring goals, this could have a big impact in seeing him potentially extend his stay at Ibrox.

Moving forward, everyone connected to the club should have their fingers crossed that Beale can not only end the season on a strong note but also convince Morelos to sign a new deal at the club and continue his journey with them.
